The second Leg of the Sustainable Journaling Method: Facts First
Writing subjectively is generally more interesting and therapeutic,
Writing objectively is often the most time-efficient and most sustainable way to write.
You might want to write your entry objectively first then add thoughts and feelings if/when you have the time and headspace for it.
This is more of a suggestion than an intrinsic part of the Sustainable Journaling Method, but it’s extremely useful to have in mind esp. on days when you’re up against any obstacles that would keep you from journaling.
Getting structured: Suggestions for tools
Bullet points: Great for when you don’t have much time to write, your mind is racing or you feel like you have too much to write. It may be useful to start your entry with bullet points. If you are hand writing your journal, you can leave space below to elaborate on any of those points later.
Setting a Timer: Helps to give structure to your journaling time.
A Starter Topic: Find a topic that doesn’t require too much thought to get you started (the weather, an interesting news headline, report on a morning routine, etc.) You can find one to use everyday or just when you need it.
Prompts: These can be a bit more thought-provoking than a starter topic. These can be helpful for when you need some direction and/or feel like yo you don’t have much to write. Click here for some examples.
Consider if any tools are more useful at various times of the day.
Examples:
Times when you’re clear headed/have time to write and reflect
Try writing subjectively
Try using prompts, writing in a free-form style,
When you’re busy or feeling scattered
Try writing objectively
Bullet points of things that happened or of things that are on your mind
When you feel like your brain isn’t awake
Try using simple prompts (favorite thing done, what you’re grateful for)
Try using bullet points
Homework
Write at least an entry title every week.
For at least one entry, write the content objectively (feel free to use bullet points) then subjectively.
Take a look at the Journaling Ideas link that includes prompts. See if you you can come up with some of your own prompts.
Bring something to write with for a writing exercise.
